Minutes of the June meeting

Minutes of the Meeting of the British Numismatic Society, held at the Society of Antiquaries of London on Monday, 22 June 2026, Dr Screen, President, being in the chair and 42 other people present [24 in person, 18 on Zoom].

The minutes of the meetings held on 26 May 2026 were approved.

NOMINATIONS: Dr Barrie John Cook (London, 1985), Prof. Jens Christian Moesgaard (Sweden) and John Porteous (London, 1955) were nominated for Honorary Membership for the second time.

ELECTIONS: Emma Baldwin (York), Peter Christmas (Worcestershire), Keith Mawhinney (Belfast) and Nick Tobergte (USA) were elected to Ordinary Membership.

The Secretary announced that Council had awarded its Blunt (Council) Prize for 2026 to Carl Savage, and North Medals for Services to British Numismatics for 2026 would be awarded to Alan Dawson, Robert Page and Mark Ray. The winners would be invited to receive their awards in person at the Anniversary Meeting in November.

The President re-read the nominations for Honorary Membership and members present voted in favour of each candidate. The President reminded those present of the forthcoming Summer Meeting in Edinburgh at the end of the week.

Dr Kevin Clancy then read a paper entitled The Tower Hill community.

The President then announced the date of the next meeting and closed the meeting.

Our next meeting – and the link to join it on Zoom

The Society resumes its 2026 programme next Monday, 28 September, at our usual venue, the Society of Antiquaries of London (SAL), at 6.15pm BST. Our speaker is one of the Society's new honorary members, Prof. Jens-Christian Moesgaard.

Prof. Moesgaard has been Professor in Numismatics at the Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Stockholm University, since 2020. Prior to that he worked at the Royal Coin Cabinet, Copenhagen, from 1997 to 2019, following spells at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Musée des Antiquités, Rouen. His talk is entitled Finds of English coins in Scandinavia from before c. 980.

The SAL is located at Burlington House, on the north side of Piccadilly, opposite the Fortnum & Mason department store. Proceed through the archway leading to the House and the SAL is on the ground floor of the west wing of the building, at the far end of the courtyard, entered through a pair of brown doors.

The nearest Underground stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park, both 5 minutes' walk away. Those attending meetings in person will be required to sign the SAL's Visitors' Book.
