Our next meeting – and the link to join it on Zoom

The Society's next meeting, on Monday, 26 October, will be staged at our usual venue, the Society of Antiquaries of London (SAL), at 6.15pm GMT (the clocks in the UK go back an hour the day before). Our speaker is Prof. Craig Muldrew, and it is the occasion of our biennial Howard Linecar Memorial Lecture.

Prof. Muldrew is Professor of Early Modern Economic and Social History at Queens' College, University of Cambridge. He specialises in British social and economic history from 1500 to 1800. Among his areas of study is the economic and social role of trust in the development of the market economy in England between 1500 and 1700, concentrating on the centrality of reputation to financial credit, and the insecurity of wealth in a world of innumerable debts. His talk is entitled Coins or credit; was money a goddess in a world of trust?

The SAL is located at Burlington House, on the north side of Piccadilly, opposite the Fortnum & Mason department store. Proceed through the archway leading to the House and the SAL is on the ground floor of the west wing of the building, at the far end of the courtyard, entered through a pair of brown doors.

The nearest Underground stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park, both 5 minutes' walk away. Those attending meetings in person will be required to sign the SAL's Visitors' Book.

If you are in London that day we look forward to your company, otherwise please join us on Zoom. To join the meeting online, please use the following registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84304394735 and the passcode 752738. If you are using the desktop version of Zoom, please ensure that you are using the most up-to-date version before joining us. The meeting itself will commence with formal business at 6.15pm and the lecture will begin immediately after that.

Our lecture on 26 October

This lecture will examine the particular role that coins play in exchange. It is common to equate coins with the term money, which is associated with the minting of coins, and from that the word money has become a shorthand for all media of exchange in economics. But this talk will argue that it was only one amongst many. This will be illustrated with examples of how and why it was used in different places and eras.

Let's talk!

The BNS Research Blog (https://britnumsoc.blog/) has been designed to allow numismatists to not only publish short papers online without going through a review process, but also to allow readers to comment and discuss the submitted articles.  The comment box at the bottom of the article introductory page is there for that purpose. Submitted comments appear immediately online. If you read an article and think it's good, then say so, and likewise, if you don't agree with something then also say so. Let's get some conversations going...

Money & Medals goes digital

For more than three decades, Money & Medals has helped share news, research, exhibitions, events and practical advice with people working with numismatic collections across the UK. First published in 1992, the printed newsletter continued until 2024, thanks in very large part to the work and dedication of our member Dr Richard Kelleher, Senior Curator of Medieval and Modern Money at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Cambridge.

From the latest issue, it is becoming a digital-only publication, with a new format designed to make it easier to share news, practical resources and opportunities. The purpose remains much the same: an information exchange for anyone working with, researching or interested in coins, medals and numismatic collections.

Since M&M's inception, Society members have been able to access its content on request. Those members who have not already received the first digital issue, and would like to receive it and further issues on a bimonthly basis, are invited to register at www.warwick.ac.uk/mmn/register
