Frome hoard British Museum placement 18th- 29th May 2026

The British Numismatic Society and the Department of Money and Medals at the British Museum is offering a two-week placement to students and recent graduates interested in numismatics. A bursary of £1500 per week is offered as a contribution towards travel, accommodation, and living expenses for the successful applicant.

This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside British Museum curators and provides both numismatic and collections management experience. The role involves working on the important Frome Roman coin hoard, assisting with the final cataloguing and preparation of the hoard for transfer to its final home at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.

The student will assist with the repackaging of the hoard, transfer information, check and update the catalogue, including confirming some identifications. They will also help with selecting coins for photography and if necessary, also undertaking some photography which will be used for its upcoming publication.

If time allows, there will also be an opportunity to work on other numismatic material, for example learning about the work of Portable Antiquities Schemes Iron Age and Roman coin Finds advisors, based in the department.

Closing date for applications is the 29th March.

As the placement will take place in term time, we ask that undergraduate and postgraduate applicants obtain written permission from their tutors before applying for the role.
